Triumph Of Marriage

Tuscan domestic pictures on cassoni (wedding chests) or spalliere (wainscoting) draw upon a wide range of sources: ancient, medieval, and contemporary. The exhibition will be on view from October 17, 2008 to January 18, 2009.

The imagery they depict ultimately reflects on the triumphant celebration of marriage, the event for which the pictures were made, and which they continued to commemorate while on display in the home.

Triumph of Marriage will showcase the art of Sandro Botticelli, Giovanni di Ser Giovanni, Francesco Pesellino on furniture, and will explore themes such as the patronage of domestic painting, the taste for pastiglia (gilded low relief), and the social roles of brides and grooms.
