Half a million people have been evacuated from the Chinese provinces of Fujian and Zhejiang in preparation for the arrival of Typhoon Fung-wong.
Fishermen have been ordered to return to port and ferry services have been suspended. Nearly 50 flights in the region have been cancelled as a precaution.
Fung-wong is expected to make landfall in China on Monday night.
The typhoon has already wreaked havoc in Taiwan and the Philippines. At least one person died in Taiwan and several are missing. Several more people are missing in the Philippines, where thousands of people were left homeless by the powerful winds and heavy rains.
