Seasonal Garden: Hanging Nasturtiums

In commemoration of Mrs. Gardner’s birthday and her love of flowers, each year the Gardner Museum presents its annual unique nasturtium display in March/April. Cultivated from clippings from the previous year’s plants, the annual display hangs 15’ to 20’ bright orange nasturtium vines from the central courtyard balconies.

The tradition was started by Mrs. Gardner herself in the early 20th century and is captured in a painting by Arthur Pope, Nasturtiums at Fenway Court (1919), on view in the Macknight Room. The Hanging g Nasturtiums is a unique display not seen anywhere else – and a must see for gardening enthusiasts!

A new tradition, every April, patrons to The Gardner Cafe can also indulge in the culinary side of nasturtium blossoms with a pair Annual Hanging Nasturtiums display of nasturtiums-infused offerings in an all-new Edible Nasturtiums menu.

The menu incorporates nasturtium blossoms into a pairing of traditional springtime favorites: a savory entree (duck confit and potato gratin); and a light springtime dessert (citrus pound cake with nasturtium syrup and orange blossom sorbet). The Hanging Nasturtiums display and Edible Nasturtiums menu are available throughout the month of April 2009. -- www.gardnermuseum.org
