The constructive role of Azerbaijan in respecting nations' right for self-determination is vital for the resolution of the conflict of Nagorno Karabakh Republic.

Today the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan are meeting in Moscow with the co-chairs of the Minsk group to find way for the resolution for the Republic of Nagorno Karabakh.

The existing problem is very similar to Kosovo.

The autonomous region of Nagorno Karabakh, which is populated by mainly Armenians after the breakup of Soviet Union declared it's independence siting numerous violations of human rights and ethnic discriminations. The people of Nagorno Karabakh used based their claim for independence on Soviet laws and the universal right of people's self-determination. The Republic of Nagorno Karabakh has never been part of Azerbaijan as such and already has a new generation that does not know what it means to live under Azerbaijan's rule.

Armenia naturally sided with the Armenian population of Nagorno Karabakh Republic to protect them from Azeri aggression. Azerbaijan's position is that Armenia has territorial claim and the issue can only be solved within the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and threatens to use force to return Karabakh to Azerbaijan even after signing indefinite cease fire in 1994 and relying on its oil wealth. Armenia's position is that the problem is of self-determination and only referendum can decided the final status of Nagorno Karabakh.

Azerbaijan is fighting a lost battle here. Instead of taking a more constructive democratic position and looking on regional cooperation beyong Karabakh, it keeps threatening the regional security by using force against people who have been fleeing persecution from Azerbaijan and using the universal right of nation's self-determination building democratic institutions in Nagorno Karabakh republic.

However, there is hope that with the help of mediators Armenia and Azerbaijan can find a light at the end of the tunnel and bring peace to their people.

Kosovo only is solved because diplomatic solution is brought on the table and the international community recognized the republic. Serbia today is looking beyond and Europe is moving on.

International community needs to take the courageous role and see the reality. If force was problem solving factor then then it's solved because we have the reality of the Republic of Nagorno Karabakh where during the last presidential elections the losing candidate recognized its defeat and congratulated the winner. Nagorno Karabakh today is few steps ahead of Armenia and Azerbaijan in quietly building its democratic institutions. In the past 20 years it's been a beacon of stability in the entire region.

A more active role is needed by the international community and world leaders in recognizing Nagorno Karabakh Republic and helping Armenia and Azerbaijan to cut a deal. This, matched by Turkey's new policy of "Zero problems with neighbors" bring new hope of stability, security and democracy for the entire region.
