Insects, Ink, Inklings: Illustrations By Jane Hyland

Carnegie Museum of Natural History Jane Hyland, scientific preparator and illustrator for the Carnegie Museum of Natural History’s Section of Invertebrate Zoology, will be exhibiting her most recent artwork examining the complex and fascinating anatomy of moths. The exhibit entitled Insect, Ink & Inklings: Illustrations by Jane Hyland will run through November 1, 2008.

Hyland’s entomological expertise and artistry will be displayed through her 25 pen and ink scientific illustrations, two watercolors, as well as a 30 x 38” trompe-oeil oil painting, a technique that uses realistic images to create a three dimensional appearance.

Visitors will admire the intricate anatomy of both male and female moths exhibited in Hyland’s precise and scientifically accurate pen and ink illustrations. These beautifully detailed drawings will feature even the tiniest aspects of these delicate creatures including antennas, legs and genitalia.

In addition to these works, moth specimens from the collection will be on display in five wall-mounted insect cases which will juxtapose Hyland’s scientific illustrations with the research moth specimens, which were collected from many parts of the world.

Visitors will even get a peek at what it takes to be a scientific illustrator and preparator through a display case featuring the various materials and tools she uses daily in her work and art. -- www.carnegiemnh.org
