In August, Target Free Thursday Nights programs include the workshop Make Your Own Message (August 7, 6–9 pm), part of The UnConvention project, a non-partisan collective of citizens and cultural institutions assembled to create a forum for a democratic and free exchange of ideas during and after the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota, from September 1–4, 2008.
Experts from The UpTake, a citizen journalist–led initiative, teach participants the basics of videography and uploading to YouTube. Other highlights in August include a screening of the film The Listening Project (August 28, 7:30 pm), introduced by Minnesota-based directors Dominic Howes and Joel Weber, part of the Walker series Cinema of Urgency, featuring documentaries on the world’s most pressing problems. The Listening Project is a cinematic journey in search of an answer to the question “What does the world think of America?” A Q&A with the directors and “listeners” featured in the film follows. Also, Sound Bites gallery talks are offered throughout the month on select Thursday evenings at 6:30 and 7 pm. Sound Bites illuminate an artist or work of art from the Walker’s world-class collection or one of its special exhibitions.

The Twin Cities will get its fair share of media attention this September as the Republican National Convention rolls into downtown St. Paul and people across the globe tune into this year’s election. What do you have to say about it? Create your own message that expresses your thoughts about the wonderful world of democracy. Experts from the UpTake, a citizen journalist–led initiative (theuptake.org), will teach the basics of handling a video camera, editing, and uploading to YouTube just in time for the convention. Selected videos will be screened at the Walker as part of the UnConvention project (unconvention.com).
