After a hit run in New York City, the new comedy about Gay-Indian self-identity and angst makes its West Coast debut at Theatre Rhinoceros, from Wed., August 13 – Sat. to August 16, at 8:00 PM. Before you can make the journey to self-enlightenment, you’ll need to prove you aren’t carrying a bomb.
As we make our way in the world, constantly reshaping our identities, how do we choose which part of ourselves to carry with us and which to bury along the way? Is it possible to forge a different path from those who came before you without losing your heritage? How do you recognize when you are finally at home in your own skin and in your own country?
An examination of what it means to be at once South Asian, American, Gay, Brown, Hindu, and Short. Finding Ways is the story of Akash, a gay Indian, who struggles with these questions and also openly engages in a dialogue about one of the biggest taboos in Southasian communities, sexuality. Akash serves as our guide on a road to self-discovery that takes us from a rural town in Nebraska, to the throbbing clubs of London, to the rooftops of India and a kite festival unlike anything you could ever have imagined, along the way to introducing us to his wily grandmother and the butch lesbians of Mumbai.
Finding Ways To Prove You’re NOT an Al-Qaeda Terrorist When You’re Brown (and other stories of the gIndian) is a funny, strange, and often heart-breaking look at the struggle to reconcile the rules of society with the undeniable power of personal desires. An experience by a fresh, funny new voice in the American theatre scene, Snehal Desai, and one not to be missed.
