Beijing 2008 Olympic Opening Watched 840 Million in China

In a press conference hosted by the IOC and BOCOG on Sunday, August 10, Giselle Davis, IOC Director of Communications, stated that the committees were in the process of collecting information on worldwide Opening Ceremony viewership.

Among statistics already compiled was data about the number of Opening Ceremony viewers in China. A whopping 840 million television watchers tuned in to the ceremony, pleasantly surprising IOC members.

CCTV News, as well as channels 1, 2, 5, and 7, all broadcasted the Opening Ceremony on August 8. Davis also revealed that in the four-hour long telecast of the performance, the average viewership of each district in China reached 49 million, a startling figure.
