How Best To Comfort Banned Olympic Singer Yang Peiyi?

Yang Peiyi and Lin Miaoke
Follow us on Twitter

News broke this morning that Lin Miaoke, the cute nine-year-old whose rendition of a Chinese revolutionary song warmed the hearts of the estimated one billion watching the Olympic opening ceremony, was lip-synching to a recording of another child.

The actual singer, seven-year-old Yang Peiyi (above left), apparently has slightly overcrowded teeth and officials decided that her appearance would let China down on such a momentous occasion.

It's likely that neither Yang Peiyi nor Lin Miaoke realized there was anything special, or awful about their teeth, until it was pointed out to them by the global media. There is now a mother somewhere in China having to explain this 'scandal' to her seven-year-old and minimize the potential damage to her self esteem.

On a much smaller scale, this is the kind of drama that regularly turns up here in school plays, carol concerts and bouquet presentations. China is hardly alone in being image-conscious, and we could say that the beauty/celebrity obsessed West has some responsibility to bear here.

Girls are being made aware of their cuteness or lack of it at a younger and younger age. If yours belongs in the latter group, how do you make sure she doesn't grow up feeling second best?

Reported by Alpha Mummy blog.

In the same place one person commented saying "I would like to see Yang Peiyi given the honor that she deserves. Let's hear MORE Yang Peiyi!!! It was HER voice, she deserves the recognition. If they didn't want to allow her to sing her own song, they should have taken more time in their search and selected someone that could truly be themselves. They are teaching their children that it is okay to misrepresent themselves (and excusing it for the sake of their country). It is my opinion that the individuals responsible for this are not being very good role models. They are encouraging everyone that it's okay to be fake. Reality: Everything and everyone has flaws. Nothing and nobody is perfect. So why do they try to make it so? They are living in a fantasy world."

Another mother commented saying these sweet words to comfort the young sinder.

To Yang Peiyi,

You sweet face and angelic voice are a perfect combination - when I look at your photo, I hear you singing. If others cannot see your beauty, it does not make it true, only that they are blind to true beauty.

With love, a mother with three beautiful children.

What would you say to comfort the 7 years old deprived Yang Peiyi?

How Could They Do That To Yang Peiyi?

Greko mom's picture

This is very very unfair to this beautiful child who has such a beautiful voice. I am glad at least the Chinsese officials had the courage to acknowledge that the voice of the other beautiful child is fake. But it's not Lin Miaoke's fault. She is just in the middle of this unfairness.

Both of you are very beaitiful and sweet. To China I say you can't achieve perfectness by faking things and deceiving the entire world.

i agree that wasnt fair

to the girl who actually sung the song let them both sing at the end

You are truly beautiful........

Dave in Canada's picture

The world is full of imitation plastic objects that do little except look good.....

You are every bit as beautiful as the young girl that could only imitate you....that was all she could do......imitate you!

You have the voice of an angel and I for one would love to see and hear you sing other songs

I hope the world sees much more of "the real thing" in the near future

They should make both of the girls sing at the closing

Grace in California's picture

The young girl who lip synched or the girl who really sang shouldn't be punished since it was the adults' fault this fiasco happened. They should just make both of them sing at the end that way the 'pretty' one won't get demonized for something that wasn't her fault. The other girl is cute which makes me scratch my head about this whole thing. Alot of chinese people are mad about this too.

Yang Peiyi singing at the close of Olympics ???

Dave's picture

Just wondering how we could put a little pressure on our Chinese friends to have Yang sing at the close of the Olympics?

It would surely give this beautiful child the chance she deserves for the whole world to see her, as well as the Chinese organisers to save a little "face" and admit that a mistake was made...

Maybe have BOTH girls sing together....

Just a thought!

Singing at the closing ceremony

Anonymous's picture

You know I think that's a great point. I hope we can start a petition to have the Chinese government let both girls sing at the closing ceremony.

@ The poster: You are right.

You are right. Image consciousness is nothing to the WEST. However, you'd be hard pressed to find a government official (especially in the oh so PC United States) who's ever told a seven-year-old she was too ugly to sing the national anthem on TV.

Can you say "career suicide"?

Thats show business

You silly boy (and I'm assuming it is a boy) - you'll learn another point of view when you grow up.

A great sin has been committed against Yang Peiyi, but she will most certainly have her day - which I look forward to immensely! Bless her sweet voice and lovely beautiful face.

Care should be taken to ensure that both the little girls in this controversial decision do not grow up with an altered self esteem. One will think she can't sing well enough while the other will believe the way she looks is her most important asset. Personally, I think both children are beautiful simply because they are innocent little girls. Sadly, they are surrounded by adults who are unable to or unwilling to consider others' feelings.

Yang Peiyi!

Anonymous's picture

I am a mother of two beautiful talented girls. Each one different and special in their own way. I made a point of looking for the picture of this child that did not meet the standards of society. She's beautiful. From her gleaming eyes to her smile. It's HER talent we all heard that night and no one has a right to take that from her. All of us here would like to let Yang know, we fell in love with your voice and now with your picture. We send our support and recognition to you Yang Peiyi from San Fernando Valley, California!

Smile of a child...

Bluey's picture

Both children will have to deal with the foolishness of adults.
Yang may have problems in the future with her self esteem.
Lin will have to live with the fact that she will always be seen as a fake... Kids can be cruel and she will be made a laughing stock.
A sad day for the Olympics... A sadder day for two innocent children.
We must learn from this well publicised mistake where ever we are on this planet...

Yang Peiyi Petition

Let her sing. she's a real cutie :-)

Yang's #1 FAN!!!!

Stephen Torres-Esquer's picture

I am extremely disappointed in the full-grown, highly educated men and women who came to the conclusion that an extremely talented, and in my opinion, an extremely cute little SEVEN YEAR OLD girl would not be allowed to represent China due to physical flaws. I am 19 years old and have much less experience and much less education than these people, yet somehow I feel much more intelligent than any of them right now. This is completely ridiculous. And many of these men and women are quite the opposite of cute themselves, so how much room do they have to talk?? NONE. That's the answer. They don't have room to talk.
Yang is adorable and I will sign any petition necessary to get her the exposure that she DESERVES, and i will buy any recordings that she WILL soon be selling to ensure her success. This is a star!! Anyone who couldn't see that before...I'm sorry...what I meant to say was that anyone who couldn't HEAR that before must be somewhat ignorant. She's gonna make it big.

Picture of 7 year old singer?

?! do you not have a self conscience ?! are you people HUMAN ?!

Let Yang Peiyi sing!

Anneli Andeer - Sweden's picture

It’s important to stand up against the fact that appearance is considered more important than talent - even so in the Olympic Games!!

In the Western world this obsession is widespread and now also China is seen embracing the same unfortunate aberration in its quest for prosperity.

We must, therefore, insist that Yang Peiyi perform and sing in the closing event!

Also, we owe it to the girl herself, who has been publicly made out as "not enough"! The only way for small Peiyi of redress is, after all, just this.

And please - sign with your own name, otherwise this petition won´t be credible! And spread it!

Yang is so cute. I just want

Hello,

Are Teeth Such a Big Deal?

Sigler's picture

I think Peiyi is pretty cute, and much more authentic looking than Miaoke (nothing against her, but she seemed pretty doll-like and not so child-like). Her voice was really cute too.

I'd love to see her sing, and it would be great if she could do in on an international stage to get the recognition she deserves. But i don't think the Chinese government is willing to surrender their facade of "perfection," and in their minds Peiyi is lacking something.
Here's hoping though.

thats low

Anonymous's picture

let the girl sing yes she is cute but it wasn't her voice i do believe she should be able to sing at the closing ceremony {USA}

I think your face is as

Anonymous's picture

I think your face is as gorgeous as your voice and obvious inner beauty.

Let all perform!

eh's picture

Poor Pei Yi! It must be devastating to know you can't show your face because you're teeth aren't straight! Jeez, people are out there trying to promote high self esteem, but there will always be low self esteem if things like this happen (and this is an event seen by they WHOLE WORLD). I think at the end, they should not only bring out both of those girls, but and whole bunch of diverse kids!
Diversity is perfection!

We made a funny video on this topic

Andrew Moskos's picture

We want to see her sing. Think of what a good PR move it woudl be for China to listen and respond and offer somethign human and not over-produced. It woudl go a long way in world opinion and might be the defining memory of the China Olympics.

Please watch our video and sign the petition!
