Music Is Inextinguishable

“Music is life, and like life, inextinguishable.” Nielsen’s personal motto is the overriding theme of his fourth and most popular symphony, which depicts an inextinguishable human spirit in the face of conflict, and uses the orchestra to great dramatic effect. Lan Shui will lead the Singapore Symphony Orchestra in this work on August 30.

Ivan Tcherepnin’s most famous work, the Double Concerto, is a homage to the great Romantic concerto genre. For this performance, violinist Lu Wei and cellist Zhao Jing will take on the solo parts.

Born in Beijing, 27-year-old violinist Lu Wei is currently the concertmaster of the Deutsches Symphony Orchester in Berlin. Lu was the first violinist to benefit from the support of the Anne-Sophie Mutter Foundation, and has performed Bach’s Double Concerto for Two Violins with Anne-Sophie Mutter on several tours.

Cellist Zhao Jing, also hailing from Beijing, won the first prize at the 2005 ARD International Music Competition in Munich. In January 2007, she was invited to perform chamber music with Japanese Crown Prince Naruhito, joined by violinist Daishin Kashimoto, bassist Dong-Hyuck Ahn and famous pianist-cum-conductor Myung-Whun Chung. -- www.sso.org.sg
