The Dallas Opera will keep the entertainment coming during the "off-season" with a series of low cost and free events designed to keep North Texas Opera lovers excited about their favorite art form while exploring new opportunities and horizons.
This multi-faceted series, entitled "FIGARO IN FLIP-FLOPS," presented by One Arts Plaza, will run through October 26, 2008 in a variety of interesting and unusual locations throughout Greater Dallas.
Whether lounging comfortably through a lecture by the popular Dr. Stephen Dubberly at Sovn European Sleep Systems, learning about the Italian language and culture (courtesy of The Italian Club of Dallas) at One Arts Plaza, watching a ballroom dance exhibition and getting the basics of the Vienna Waltz from the renowned duo of Tami and David Conner, or sinking your teeth into the five operas of the upcoming season in ethnic cooking classes conducted at The Viking School at Milestone Culinary Arts Center – pinch yourself and remember, that's just the beginning! Learn the finer points of judging the world's favorite bubbly at a Happy Hour Champagne tasting at Dali Wine Bar & Cellar in One Arts Plaza.
The Dallas Opera has issued an open invitation to the community to attend FREE movie screenings: outdoors at Victory Plaza and indoors at the Inwood Theatre's "Living Room Series," in addition to an after-lunch book club hosted by "Inside The Dallas Opera's" Suzanne Calvin at the Barnes & Noble Prestonwood Center location off Beltline.
We will also be tempting the public with several scrumptious tastes of the upcoming "Lovers & Scoundrels" Season at venues including Mozzarella Cheese Company, Cafe Madrid (Bishop Arts), Jorg's Cafe Vienna in Plano, and La Duni, as well as a tantalizing exploration of Gioachino Rossini-inspired dishes at Salum's.
Flip-Flops are optional – Reservations for tastings and receptions are required.
The Dallas Opera will add a musical note to this year's DADA Gallery Walk in September; and we'll take you to the Meadows Museum, the Nasher Sculpture Center and The Frontiers of Flight Museum over the next several months for some high- minded adventures!
The curious will also have a chance to explore the Deep Ellum/Fair Park cutting-edge arts scene with The Dallas Opera at Centraltrak on Exposition Avenue, where you'll not only learn about Puccini's La boheme, you'll see that art on the fringes is a vigorous tradition that carries on today. -- www.dallasopera.org
