Wilmington man wins $376,821 "Carolina Cash 5" of NC Lottery. Fred Hammond of Wilmington couldn’t believe it when he saw that his July 15 “Carolina Cash 5” ticket matched all five numbers drawn. He says he checked the NC lottery numbers at least 10 times thinking “this can’t be right.” What he saw was right, though. His ticket was worth $376,821!
Hammond purchased his winning ticket at Masonboro Country Store on Masonboro Loop Road in Wilmington. When Hammond claimed his prize at North Carolina Education Lottery (NCEL) headquarters, he told NCEL staff that he plans to pay off bills and give some of the money to his children. After growing to more than half a million dollars, the “Carolina Cash 5” top prize was hit on what many considered a lucky day of the year—8-8-08. One ticket in the Aug. 8 “Carolina Cash 5” drawing matched all five white balls to win the top prize of $580,275.
The ticket was sold at Wilco #1814 on Neuse Boulevard in New Bern. The prize has yet to be claimed. In the Saturday, Aug. 9, Powerball drawing, three tickets matched four out of five white balls plus the Powerball and are worth $10,000 each.
These tickets were sold at Friendly Mart #9 on North East Boulevard in Clinton, Mobile-55 on West Williams Street in Apex, and Fastop Market #302 on Smoky Park Highway in Candler. A total of 33,934 North Carolina Powerball players won prizes in Saturday night’s Powerball drawing, ranging from $10,000 down to $3 for a total payout in prizes worth $386,301.
No one matched all five white balls plus the Powerball to win the jackpot, so the jackpot for the Wednesday, Aug. 13, drawing is an estimated $25 million. The NCEL has paid out more than $6.7 million total in instant scratch-off ticket prizes since Thursday, Aug. 7.
Also since Thursday, “Carolina Cash 5” players have won nearly $784,000 and “Carolina Pick 3” players have won more than $786,000 in prizes.
