Also, it is absolutely true that when a kid has ADD or ADHD, helping them find a passion, especially a physical passion which involves getting off of one’s duff and doing something with one’s body, whether that something is on a field, a farm, a mountain or an ocean, will make a world of difference.
First of all when you have ADD or ADHD, sitting around listening to other people talk is really really really difficult. Your mind boomerangs around, and it almost torturous to deal with that kind of noise in your head.
Naturally not every kid with this disability is going to be Rapunzel and turn hay into gold, but EVERY single person who has ADD or ADHD, will feel a lot better if they can spend a good majority of their day doing stuff that does not involve sitting in a chair. In fact EVERYBODY will benefit from being active every single day.
One of the reasons that I advocate sports for all kids in high school or 4H or theater or music or something that involves a different area of the brain and one’s actual body is that it is easy to go nuts just sitting in classroom after classroom listening to someone give out INFORMATION, and then going home and taking in more INFORMATION, and then proceeding to spew out yet more INFORMATION in the form of flashcards, worksheets and essays and then repeating the process all over again the next day.
In addition, the major form of “relaxation” in this country now is spent SITTING down at computers (look at what I am doing now), in front of television screens, movie theaters or video games. Come on people. We need to be up and about doing stuff. Our kids certainly need that so whether someone has a tag of ADD or ADHD or MYOB or ROTFL or you know what I mean make sure that you see to it that your kid gets plenty of exercise of the body and spirit in additon to the mind.
You may not end up storing your kids’ gold medals in a closet one day, but I guarantee you will have a much happier child and teenager on your hands. Thus ends my public service announcement for the day.
