This concert sees the interesting collaboration between Liu Sha, conductor of Central Chinese Orchestra; Tang Lok-Yin, winner of the Young Composer Award at the 2006 Singapore Chinese Orchestra’s International Competition for Chinese Orchestral Composition and Meng Jie, Singapore Chinese Orchestra’s youngest Suona player who just recently presented his solo recital at the Esplanade.
Making his debut appearance as a conductor in Singapore and also with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, Liu Sha is also the conductor of China Youth Chinese Orchestra, instructor of conducting department in Central Music Conservatory and member of China Conductors’ Society. This relatively new face in the industry is known for his creativity and exploratory work on Chinese orchestras’ audio presentations. In 2005, he was appointed as the main adjudicator of the “Singapore Youth Festival” under the invitation of Singapore Ministry of Education.
Tang Lok-Yin, who is currently pursuing her Doctorate in Composition at the Chinese University of Hong Kong will bring her new composition Chao, a Suona concerto. Also a visiting scholar at Columbia University under Fulbright scholarship, Tang has received numerous composition awards and her works have been frequently performed in other parts of the world, including Germany, France, Belgium, Denmark, Poland, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore, China and Macao.
Presenting Tang’s Chao is Singapore Chinese Orchestra’s young Suona player Meng Jie. A born music talent, Meng Jie has received offers to enter China’s most prestigious conservatories in his young age, namely the China Conservatory, Central Music Conservatory, Liberatory Army Arts Institute and Central University of Nationalities. In 2006 he graduated from China Conservatory of Music with excellent results and was awarded the honorary title of Excellent Graduate.
Singapore Chinese Orchestra Yangqin Prinicipal Qu Jian Qing will also perform solo in The Sun Shines on Tashkurghan. For the full concert programme, please refer to the appendix.
