In a typically and not entirely politically correct kind of way, an Australian Mayor has managed to enrage the sensitive feelings of his countries women – and even some of the men. This is surprising since it is well known that the outback of Australia and the PC world of the California and London are not exactly on the same wavelength.
The Mayor of the remote mining town of Mount Isa in Queensland Australia has noticed a big discrepancy in its quota of males compared to the younger female population and as the subtle mayor put it: “With 5 blokes to every girl, maybe there’s a place here for some ugly women here”.
The remarks have met with some consternation if not outrage, but the said Mayor, one Mr Moloney retorted that he was simply stating the basic truth. Mount Isa needed some more women and it didn’t really matter if they were lookers or not.
Mount Isa is over 1,000 miles out from Melbourne and could be regarded as ‘out in the sticks’ Not the sort of place anyone would choose to spend a great deal of time in. But perhaps, as home to one of the worlds biggest underground mines, it’s a place where some ugly ducklings (Mr Maloneys words) might find friendship and a home. At least that’s what Mr Maloney is hoping for in his public statement aimed to bring in some extra ladies. Given that out of a population of 24,000 there are just 819 women aged between 20 and 24, his thinking is not entirely illogical.
Counciller Jean Ferris was obviously not in agreement with Mr Maloney and hailed the statement as an absolute disgrace. "We should not having to be defending the council and the Maoyors opinions".
Time will tell if the words of Mr Maloney will bear fruit, or for the sake of ones own esteem, Mount Isa is the last place on earth for any self respectiong woman would choose to migrate to.
