DirtChild: Sculpture Meets Hip-Hop

Dirt Child (Belle Brooks) is the newest Hip- Hop sensation to come out of Sydney. Sounds like a strange phenomena based around a mythological creature that arises when a bunch of sewer rats intertwine to become one huge rat-like mutant. This rat-like intertwining aspect is a representation of the phenomena of hodge-podge and ratty Hip-Hop.

Initially, Brooks began as a visual artist and majored in sculpture. This element still resinates and is reflected within the energetic vibes that she lets loose when she raps. With an up bringing that stems from a quite artistic family: Brooks has come a long way to break away from the norms of the little NSW town that she grew up in.

Brooks does not consider herself the same as other serious Hip-Hop artists because she comes from a visual arts background. This in itself comes across strong and is something that adds to the raw vibe of “Dirt Child”. She has been producing quite a great deal of sculptures and as she lives within the vibes and lifestyle of being with other artists it has led her to experiment with her own outlet of producing Hip-Hop sounds.

The EP is something that Brooks herself doesn’t feel is really Aussie Hip-Hop. Instead, Brooks feels she created her sound around a great deal of heavy rhymes. Also, the distinct sounds that come from this EP are that which reflect an attitude that is tongue-in-cheek and has a go at other artists. The other aspect that comes out within the vibes of this EP and central to the over all success is that of a sexual element that still remains free enough to be just for fun.

This resonance comes from a young woman discovering Hip-Hop. Ratking has an essence that stems from an artistic art form, such as sculpture. It’s a finding that Australian media has already labeled DirtChild as our own version of Lady Sovereign. This however, is not something that Brooks feels she can relate to and sees her self quite distinctively different from such an artist. She picked up this path to rap through free-styling with an other artist at the time and has now found herself doing gigs and bring her vibes through an obsessed but intricate manner of making rhymes.
DirtChild’s debut EP Ratking is out now through Fuse.
