Late-night television talk-show host David Letterman reportedly was the victim of a $2 million extortion plot.

The attempt to extort money from the CBS-TV host related to sexual affairs he had with members of his staff, according to various media reports. Letterman married his longtime companion Regina Lasko in March. They have a son born in 2003.

One news reporter indicated that David Letterman told his audience during the taping of CBS's "Late Show with David Letterman," that he received a package three weeks ago from an individual who claimed to have information about his sexual activities and demanded $2 million to avoid going public with the personal information.

Letterman said he went to the Manhattan District Attorney's office. Their officials conducted an investigation which resulted in an arrest earlier on Thursday. There were no immediate details on the suspect.

Letterman had previously told a grand jury that he had relations with members of his staff according to news reports. "My response to that is, yes I have," he said. "Would it be embarrassing if it were made public? Perhaps it would. I feel like I need to protect these people -- I need to certainly protect my family."

The New York Daily News report said investigators instructed Letterman to mail a phony $2 million check to the individual, which led to the extortionist's arrest on Thursday.
