NEC

NEC Corporation (NEC) announced that it has been selected by Norway's leading telecom service provider, Telenor, as one of two main suppliers of microwave communication systems.

In November 2006, NEC took part in the tender process based on a global framework contract covering all of the 14 majority-owned affiliates of the Telenor Group including operators Pannon GSM Telecommunications Ltd. of Hungary, Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd of Malaysia, Kyivstar GSM of Ukraine, Grameenphone Ltd. of Bangladesh and Telenor Pakistan of Pakistan.

Telenor's total demand for microwave communication systems for the period January, 2007 to June, 2008 is approximately 21,000 terminals, of which NEC has won a 60% - 65% share. NEC will supply a point-to-point access microwave radio systems from its PASOLINK Series, long-haul, large-capacity telecommunication backbone, SDH microwave communication systems from its 3000/5000 Series, and related services such as installation and commissioning.

NEC established a business relationship with the Telenor Group in the area of microwave communication systems in 1980, and has since delivered approximately 1,100 sets from its 3000 Series and 15,000 sets from its PASOLINK Series to the Telecom giant. The new contract can be attributed to NEC's close relationships with its customers, its long-standing experience in the field, a high level of maintenance services, advanced and high-quality technologies, and its leading position in the global microwave communication systems market.

With the increasingly rapid global expansion of mobile subscribers and mobile internet services, demand for microwave communication systems is expected to see substantial growth owing to their ability to provide quick installation of telecommunication infrastructure and increased demand for microwave systems.

NEC will continue to drive its advantageous position in the mobile and wireless communication systems market to expand its growth and business operations worldwide - NEC.
