Hailed by Rolling Stone as the "Queen of Folkabilly," Grammy Award-winning Nanci Griffith is one of the brightest lights in a new generation of artists merging country with folk and pop music. Griffith's beautiful voice, brilliant songwriting and uncommon emotional commitment have captivated fans worldwide, from Austin's Hole in the Wall bar to New York's Carnegie Hall, from Nashville's Grand Ole Opry to London's Royal Albert Hall.
Don't miss her live performances with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra and Associate Conductor Jeffrey Pollock Feb. 8-11 at Bass Performance Hall. Concerts start at 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.
Griffith has penned such classics as "Gulf Coast Highway" (a notable duet by Emmylou Harris and Willie Nelson), "Love At The Five And Dime" (a Grammy-nominated hit for Kathy Mattea) and "Outbound Plane" (a hit for Suzy Bogguss). In turn she was the first to record Julie Gold's Grammy-winning classic "From A Distance," which was used twice to awaken astronauts on space shuttle missions. She has also been honored with five Grammy nominations, three as a solo artist (winning for Other Voices, Other Rooms) and twice for performances on albums by The Chieftains.
Born in 1953 in Seguin, Texas, she grew up in Austin. She learned to play the guitar from a Saturday morning PBS series and had her first professional gig at Austin's Red Lion Club when she was 14. After graduating from the University of Texas with an education degree, she taught kindergarten and first grade in Austin during the 1970s even as she held a five-year Sunday night spot at the Hole In The Wall. After releasing three albums, her major breakthrough finally came with the Grammy-nominated Last Of The True Believers featuring her signature songs "Love At The Five And Dime" and "The Wing And The Wheel."
These concerts are made possible, in part, by the generous support of Star-Telegram. Promotional support is provided by the Star-Telegram and WRR Classical 101.1 FM.
