Newman Crashes Early in Modified Race

Starting with tonight’s Whelen Modified Tour UNOH Perfect Storm 150 race, Sprint Cup driver Ryan Newman began his quest of completely every lap raced during this week’s races at Bristol Motor Speedway. Bristol is hosting four NASCAR races with the Camping World Truck Series, Nationwide Series and the Sprint Cup Series also racing at the “World’s Fastest Half Mile.”

Due to rain qualifying was rained out and Newman had to start from the rear of the field with fellow Cup driver Kasey Kahne. Newman would have a lot of traffic to work through by starting in the back of the field.

With typical Bristol fashion, traffic would result in a quick caution. Newman’s quest to complete every lap was over shortly after it started. On lap two, Newman was involved in a wreck ending his race in the Whelen Modified Tour’s UNOH Perfect Storm 150. Newman ended up finishing 37th.

Newman’s racing was not finished with racing for the night though. While the Modified race went on without him, he prepared for the truck race that was the second half of the double header of the night’s racing events. If he had been able to have completed the Modified race, then Newman would have had the chance to have raced 1,100 laps this week at Bristol.

As with all races at Bristol the Modified race was a typical hard fought short track race. The race was filled with exciting racing for every position around the track; including a close battle for the win between Ted Christopher who led most of the race and Donny Lia.

The two would battle to the end for the win and changed positions several times. Lia went on to win the inaugural UNOH Perfect Storm 150. While Lia was celebrating the win, Kahne’s night was not what he was hoping for. He finished 49 laps down in 28th position.
