Preparing for Tropical Storm Danny or Possibly Hurricane Danny

Tropical Storm Danny formed east of the Bahamas around 11 am ET Wednesday morning. Computer programs predict he will strengthen to become Hurricane Danny by Saturday when it is expected to be off the North Carolina coast. Residents along the eastern US coastline from South Carolina to the New England states are being told to start preparing for Tropical Storm Danny.

Currently Tropical Storm Danny has winds of only 45 mph and is moving west-north west at 20 mph. The projected path is for Danny to skirt up the eastern US coastline where it is expected into becoming a level one hurricane. Only the fourth named storm so far for this hurricane season, Danny will be the second named storm to go up the eastern US coastline. Hurricane Bill went between the US and Bermuda just a week ago.

Here are some steps to prepare for a tropical storm or a hurricane for those in the projected path of Tropical Storm Danny.

- Now is the time to discuss your plan with your family. Go over how to deal with things such as turning off all the power, gas and water to the house. Make a plan to where everyone can meet up if you get separated and a contact plan. Do not forget to make plans for your pets.

- Gather the supplies you will need. You will need at least three days of food and water. The power may be off, so have nonperishable food items that do not require cooking or refrigeration. Some possible items are: canned milk and juice, canned fruit, ready-to-eat canned meats, granola bars, and peanut butter.
- You will also need to have paper plates and cups as well as plastic utensils since the water may be off or unusable.

- Make sure you have new batteries in all flashlights and radios.

- Secure your home by boarding up any windows or securing any storm shutters. Tap the glass to help prevent flying glass if it gets broken. Fill any jugs, containers and bathtubs with water.

- Remove or secure any items such as tree limbs or garbage cans that could become air borne.

It is still early to know for sure where Tropical Storm Danny is heading, but it appears he has plans for a weekend trip to the eastern shores of the US. It is also still too early to know if he will become Hurricane Danny making him only the second hurricane to form this year.
