The US Open 2009 results are in for day seven setting up with what appears will be an interesting final week starting on Monday. A full day of play was on the schedule for Sunday and the fans packed the seats as the Open is sold out for the Labor Day weekend matches.
There were four women singles matches on Sunday. The number 2 seed Serena Williams defeated the number 22 seed Daniela Hantuchova in a very fast and short 64 minute match: 6-2, 6-0. Serena simply dominated Hantuchova with her power serves and ground play.
By hitting the ball into the corners, Serena kept Hantuchova on the move. This opened up the court for Serena to place the ball where she wanted. It also caused Hantuchova to create numerous errors. Serena ended the game with 27 winners and won 85% of her first serve. Serena has beaten Hantuchova eight of the nine times they have played.
Serena's sister Venus Williams was not as fortunate in her match on Sunday. Venus lost to former world number one ranked player Kim Clijsters in three sets: 6-0, 0-6, 6-4. Clijsters continues to be a surprise in the 2009 US Open. Her win on Sunday against the number 3 seeded Venus is definitely the highlight so far of her comeback from retirement.
Clijsters capitalized on Venus errors during the match. Venus had five double faults that may have been the result of the injury to her left knee that was still very heavily wrapped for the match.
Na Li reached her first appearance in the quarterfinals in the US Open by beating Francesca Schiavone in two sets: 6-2, 6-3. During the match both Li and Schiavone committed unforced errors. Li committed 19 while Schiavone committed 14.
Schiavone attempted to comeback during the match. Li's strong play was more than she could overcome. Li had 22 winners during the match.
In the other women's single match Flavia pennetta beat Vera Zvonareva 3-6, 7-6, (8-6), 6-0.
The men's single 3rd round finished up with Sunday's play. Number 3 seed Rafael Nadal defeated Nicolas Almagro in three sets: 7-5, 6-4, 6-4. During the whole match Nadal struggled with inconsistent serves.
Both Nadal and Almagro suffered from unforced errors. Nadal had 25 unforced errors and Almagro committed 52 unforced errors. Nadal won the Australian Open earlier in the year.
Fernando Gonzalez had lost to Tomas Berdych the last three times they had met, but Sunday's match was his. Gonzalez won the hard fought match: 7-5, 6-4, 6-4. Berdych and Gonzalez both were hitting the ball hard during their match on Sunday.
Juan Martin Del Potro used his hard hitting ground game and his much improved serve to beat Daniel Koellerer in four sets: 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Del Potro lost his first set of the tournament when Koellerer outplayed him in the second set. Del Potro came back strong and ended up with 20 aces and 56 winners for the match.
In the remaining men's single matches J-Wilfried Tsonga beat Juilien Benneteau 7-6, (7-4), 6-2, 6-4. Martin Cilic won in his match with Denis Istomin 6-1, 6-4, 6-3. Two matches were retired; Gael Monfils and Jose Acasuso: 6-3, 6-4, 1-0 and Juan Carlos Ferrero and Gilles Simon: 1-6, 6-4, 7-6, (7-5), 1-0.
The 2009 US Open results from Sunday's play have set the stage for the last week of the tournament. With each match the play should get better and the games more interesting for the fans that continue to pack the stadiums. It also brings the winners one step closer to the finals later in the week.
