US Open Tennis 2009 Results: Kim Clijsters Into Semifinals

It has been since 2000 when the last unseeded player reached the women's singles semifinals. Change the record book, because it has happened again. In the quarterfinals of the US Open tennis 2009 results with unseeded Kim Clijsters defeating Li Na in straight sets: 6-2, 6-4.

Li Na was the number 18 seed for the 2009 US Open and had not lost a set going into the match. Li Na could not overcome committing 41 unforced errors or the play of Clijsters.

Returning in August to the tennis world after a two year retirement, Clijsters is growing stronger in every match. The match against Li Na was her 12th straight victory in the 2009 US Open tennis tournament.

Clijsters defeated Vensus Williams in the fourth round and could possibly face Vensus's sister Serena in the semifinals. Serena plays later against Flavia Pennetta.

Entering into the 2009 US Open as a wild card, Clijsters had struggled with injuries prior to taking two years off to marry former Villanova basketball star Brian Lynch and have a child. It appears though that the time off has not hindered the 26 year old from winning matches.

The win against Li Na gave Clijsters her 100th Grand Slam main draw victory. This places Clijsters among four other active women players to have accomplished this. Amelie Mauresmo, Elena Dementieva and both Vensus and Serena Williams have all accomplished this.

Regardless of what the US Open tennis 2009 results are for Clijsters in the semifinals, she has already accomplished another feat. She has tied Jimmy Connors for the best-ever finish of a wild card (man or woman) for the US Open. Connors reached the semifinals in 1991 as a wild card. Maybe if the ball bounces right, Clijsters may hold that honor all by herself after the semifinals match.
