The 17 year old Oudin had thrilled the crowds at the US Open and had won the hearts and interest of every one across the country. She had entered into the US Open unseeded and had defeated four Russians on her way to the quarterfinals.
Wednesday though was not her day. Earlier in the day, Oudin had to change hotels because her reservations had ran out. Obviously even she did not expect herself to still be playing by the quarterfinals. But Oudin was playing in the quarterfinals of the US Open and it probably will not be her last time.
If it had not been for the Cinderella story of Oudin, this year's story would have been the incredible play of yet another young tennis star, Wozniacki. Only 19 years old, Wozniacki was the number 9 seed of the 2009 US Open. Wozniacki defeated the number 6 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova to reach the quarterfinals.
The crowd filled the Auther Ashe Stadium Wednesday night to watch these two young and very talented tennis stars battle it out for the chance to play in the semifinals. Wozniacki jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first set.
It was Oudin's first time playing under the lights at the US Open and she got off to another slow start just as she had done in her previous match. In fact, Oudin had lost the first set in all of her matches at the 2009 US Open.
In game 4 of the first set, Oudin finally started to show some spark and won the game. But she could not maintain the spark and even displayed her frustration on the court. Wozniacki went on to win the first set 6-2.
In the second set Oudin tried her patented take charge play in the second set, but her frustration continued to build. Many of her volleys would go just long and be out. Oudin committed a total of 43 unforced errors for the match.
Even though Oudin fought back in the second set and it was actually closer than the score indicates, Wozniacki would win the set and the match with another 6-2 score.
The young Oudin could never get herself going into the game despite her efforts to pump herself up with her "come on" pep talk. It is hard to say if it was her nerves, playing under the lights for the first time or the simple fact that Oudin had used all of her magic up for the 2009 US Open.
It was obvious from the start that Wozniacki was there to play. She maintained her focus through the whole match.
Now Wozniacki will have to prepare for her first ever appearance in a Grand Slam semifinal. She will play another unseeded player, Yanina Wickmayer. Also a 19 year old, Wickmayer defeated Kateryna Bondarenko in the quarterfinals.
It only took 1 hour and 28 minutes for Wozniacki to defeat Oudin. Regardless of what their US Open tennis 2009 final results are both Wozniacki and Oudin have shown what the crowd has to look forward to for many years to come.
