When the US Open tennis 2009 results for day ten shows a day of tough matches, another upset and a Cinderella story coming to an end. It was a day of heartbreak and joy on the courts.
The women's quarterfinals wrapped up setting the semifinals line up. Unseeded Yanina Wickmayer has played her way into a semifinal match Caroline Wozniacki. Wickmayer defeated Kateryna Bondarenko in the quarterfinals in straight sets: 7-5, 6-4.
The 2009 US Open has been Wickmayer's best tournament so far for this 19 year old in her career. Previously, Wickmayer had never made it past the second round of a major tournament.
To advance to the semifinals to face off against Wickmayer, Wozniacki won the match of the tournament so far. Wozniacki continued to play steady and defeated the Cinderella player of the 2009 US Open Melanie Oudin in the quarterfinals with a score of 6-2, 6-2.
Novak Djokovic continued on with his winning at the 2009 US Open by defeating Fernando Verdasco in the men's quarterfinal. Off his impromptu match with John McEnroe on Monday night, Djokovic battled the wind and Verdasco to win in four sets: 7-6(2), 1-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Number one seed Roger Federer defeated Robin Soderling to advance one step closer to the 2009 US Open title. Federer was able to beat Soderling in four sets: 6-0, 6-3, 6-7,7-6. Federer breezed through the first two sets, but the last two sets were hard fought with each set going into a tie breaker.
Women's doubles quarterfinals finished up on Wednesday. Cara Black and Liezel Huber defeated Nuria Llagostera Vives and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez with a score of 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. In the other women's double quarterfinal match, Serena and Venus Williams advance to the semifinals by beating Zi Yan and Jie Zheng in straight sets: 7-5, 6-4.
The men's double semifinals gave the day’s big upset. Number one seed Bob and Mike Bryan lost to number 4 seed Lukas Dlouhy and Leander Paes: 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(6) in a hard fought match. Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles defeated Max Mirnyi and Andy Ram in straight sets: 6-4, 6-2.
Thursday is a fairly light day of matches for the pros at the 2009 US Open. Serena and Venus Williams will be playing again in the women's double semifinals against Alisa Kleybanova and Ekaterina Makarova.
The men's quarterfinals continue with two matches. Juan Martin Del Potro plays Marin Cilic. Cilic upset Andy Murray earlier in the week. Fernando Gonzales will try to upset Rafael Nadal to advance to the semifinals.
At the end of Thursday, the mixed doubles will know their US Open tennis 2009 results. Carly Gullickson and Travis Parrott will face off the number 2 seed team of Cara Black and Leander Paes in the mxed doubles final. Paes also advanced to the men’s double final with his and teammate Dlouhy's upset over the Bryan brothers on Wednesday.
