The 2009 US Open tennis tournament is starting to finish up. The play though is still going strong until the rains came that is. Still another exciting day of play with one pair leaving the tournament with US Open tennis 2009 results they could only have dreamed of before.
That pair was not even a pair all that long ago and they leave as the mixed doubles champions of the 2009 US Open. This was the first tournament that Carly Gullickson and Travis Parrott, both from the US, played together as a team. They only teamed up after Abigail Spears, whom Parrott had planned to play with, pulled out.
Neither Gullickson nor Parrott had ever won a major title of any kind. They had only five double titles between them. They entered the 2009 US Open as a wild card.
That did not stop them from going through the tournament defeating seeded teams along the way. They even defeated the number 1 seeded team of Liezel Huber and Mahesh Bhupathi in the semifinals to advance to the finals.
On Thursday, Gullickson and Parrott played another incredible match and defeated the team of Cara Black and Leander Paes: 6-2, 6-4. Black and Paes were the defending champions of the US Open.
Paes and Black are not finished playing in the 2009 US Open. Paes will play in the men's doubles final match on Friday as a result of his and teammates Lukas Dlouhy's upset of the number 1 seed Bryan brothers in the semifinal. Black and her teammate Huber are the number 1 seeds for the women's doubles will play in the semifinals of the women's doubles.
After their outstanding play in their first tournament together, Gullickson and Parrott will surely team up again for more victories.
The women's doubles semifinals match on Thursday was between the number 4 seed Serena and Venus Williams against number 13th seed Alisa Kleybanova and Ekaterina Makarova. The match was long, hard fought and the wind played a factor.
The match lasted over two and half hours. The first set was long and grueling with the Williams sisters winning it in a tie breaker, 7-6.
Kleybanova and Makarova charged back and took the second set. The power play of the Williams sisters would win the match by taking the third set. The final score was 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-2.
The Williams sisters are a powerful pair. They have won the Australian Open and Wimbledon already this year. If they win the 2009 US Open, then it will be their second time. They previously won it in 1999.
With both number 6 seed Juan Martin Del Potro and number 16 seed Marin Cilic's impressive wins in the fourth round, their quarterfinal men's match was expected to be a thriller. Both players played strong for half the match.
Fresh off his upset of number 2 seed Andy Murray, Cilic started off really strong in the match. He won the first set impressively. During the second set, Del Potro came back and he finished the match strong as Cilic faded. The final score was 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1.
Del Potro's win advances him into the semifinals. It will be his first US Open semifinals appearance.
The US Open tennis 2009 results of the men's semifinals match between Rafael Nadal and Fernando Gonzalez reads – to be continued. Rain halted play twice during the match. The second time it started to rain the match was scheduled to be completed on Friday. The score stands at Nadal leading 7-6(4), 6-6(3-2).
