When a team has a player that has a career night in rushing yards and three touchdowns each 60 yards or longer, that team usually wins the game. On Friday night, Ryan Mathews Fresno State had such an incredible game and it was not enough as Boise State won 51-34 over Fresno State.

Mathews had the game of his college career so far. He rushed for a career high 234 yards. Three of those rushes were for touchdowns and each one was 60 yards or longer. Most players do not do that in a whole season. In 2008, only 12 players ran for three touchdowns 60 or longer yards during the whole season. Mathews did that in one game.

Fresno State also had more yards in total offense than Boise State. Fresno State had 507 total offensive yards compared to Boise State's 480. Still that was not enough to beat the explosive Boise State.

With a 30 yard interception return for a touchdown by Winston Venable in the first two minutes of the game, Boise State jumped out to an early lead. They stretched the lead out to 24-3 when Fresno State fought back making Boise State have to fight for the win in the fourth quarter.

Boise State was lead by the play of Jeremy Avery, Titus Young and DJ Harper. Avery had three runs longer than 60 yards himself during the game. Young scored two touchdowns, including one on a fumble recovery in the end zone. Avery ran for 74 yards and the ball was stripped and rolled into the end zone where Young was able to fall on it.

It was a night for long runs. Harper also ran 60 yards for a Boise State touchdown. Plus Boise State had two kickoff returns for 77 yards.

This game was filled with plays for the highlight-reel by both teams. The two teams scored three touchdowns in just over a minute to start the fourth quarter. During the fourth quarter, the number 10 ranked Boise State pulled out to comfortable lead for the victory.

Boise State has won the last four meetings with Fresno State and leads the series 8-4. This makes Fresno State’s 10th straight loss to a top 25 ranked team.

Despite Ryan Mathews Fresno State incredible game, Fresno State drops to (1-2,0-1) for the season so far. Boise State's win is their 57th out of their last 59 Western Athletic Conference and gives them a record of (3-0,1-0) to start of the 2009 season.
