During this weekend, products with the Energy Star logo are exempt from state and local sales tax if it is purchased for personal use. Unlike surrounding states that also hold a sales tax holiday for appliances, North Carolina does not have an upper limit on the price of the product in order for it to still qualify for the sale exemption.
The qualifying energy efficient products that can be purchased tax exempt include heat pumps, freezers, refrigerators, dishwashers, air conditioners, fluorescent light bulbs, washers, doors, windows, ceiling fans, programmable thermostats and dehumidifiers. The products that qualify for the sales tax holiday must meet the Energy Star program requirements and will have an Energy Star symbol on them.
Established in 1992 by the EPA, the Energy Star program help consumers know which appliances are energy efficient. This reduction in energy saves the consumer money over the live of the appliance. Also due to these products reduction in energy usage, they also reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions produced compared to their older counterparts.
Since 2008, the residents of North Carolina have been able to save money one weekend a year while they replace their older appliances. With the recent 1% sales tax increase that went into effect in September, shoppers will benefit from the 2009 North Carolina Energy Star sales tax holiday for appliances in November.
