Residents of South Carolina were looking forward to saving some money during the state's sales tax holiday for appliances in 2009. Instead that will not happen as the South Carolina Energy Star sales tax holiday for appliances was eliminated.
In 2008, the South Carolina General Assembly created the Energy Star sales tax holiday for appliances. The holiday was scheduled to be the whole month of October starting in 2009.
When the legislators created the Energy Star sales tax holiday, they put into place the stipulation that the holiday would only occur during the years that the South Carolina economy was doing well. Early in 2009, the sales tax holiday for appliances was delayed till 2010 due to the economic forecast for the state government.
With a ruling on May 4, 2009 from the South Carolina Supreme Court, there will not be a sales tax holiday for appliances in 2010. The Court ruled that the act creating the South Carolina Energy Star sales tax holiday was unconstitutional. Thus it has been eliminated.
Shoppers would have been able to purchase energy efficient products without paying sales tax on those items during the month of October. Items that would have been tax exempt with the holiday included refrigerators, fluorescent light bulbs, air conditioners, washers and many more.
With the South Carolina Energy Star sales tax holiday for appliances being eliminated, the state residents have the choice of crossing state borders to save on their purchases of appliances. Georgia holds their sales tax holiday for appliances October 1-4, 2009. North Carolina holds their Energy Star sales tax holiday on November 6-8, 2009.
