The 27th annual International Day of Peace is Monday, September 21, 2009. Peace Day established by the United Nations to help promote peace throughout the world.
Established in 1981 by the General Assembly of the United Nations, the International Day of Peace is designed to get people not only thinking about peace, but doing something about peace. September 21st was declared the permanent date for Peace Day to be observed every year in 2002.
People around the world are celebrating Peace Day in a variety of ways. There are large community gatherings planned in some parts of the world. Other people are observing the International Day of Peace more privately with a candle or just a moment of silence and prayer.
A Day of Ceasefire is also part of the observance for the International Day of Peace. It is a unified day without violence. The Peace Day observance provides hope that one day there will be no more violence throughout the world. Hopefully the Day of Ceasefire will be observed and will be the start of end of violence across the globe.
Peace Day is not only about promoting peace in a political conflict, but also in personal ones. So be a little nicer to those around you and it might be a start of something wonderful. The International Day of Peace is officially only one day a year, but together we can make it many more each year.
