If you owe the state of Virginia back taxes, then you may be able to save some money when you pay the delinquent amount. That is if you pay off the outstanding balance in the next two months. Virginia's tax-amnesty program starts October 7th and runs through December 5th.

During these two months, the state of Virginia is giving delinquent tax payers a chance to pay the taxes they owe without having to pay the 20% late penalty fee. Participants of the tax-amnesty program will also only have to pay half the interest they would normally have to pay.

The Virginia Department of Taxation's "Get Square on Back Taxes" campaign is sending out 550,000 notices to both individual taxpayers and businesses that are delinquent on their taxes to show them how much they could possibly save if they participate in the tax-amnesty program. Those eligible for the program have outstanding tax bills that are 90 days or older.

The Virginia government is hoping to bring in around $48 million in past due taxes through the tax-amnesty program. It is estimated that the average outstanding tax bill due to the state is $2,315.

This is not the first time Virginia has offered a tax-amnesty program to delinquent tax payers. The state offered one in 1990 that brought in $32 million. The most recent one back in 2003 brought the state $98 million.
