The Federal tax credit for energy efficiency allows you to take the tax credit if you replace your old water heater with a qualifying one. It also covers biomass stoves as well.

Water Heaters
Replace your old water heater with a gas, oil or propane one that has an energy factor greater than or equal to .83 or has a thermal efficiency of at least 90% and you can claim the tax credit on your taxes. Learn more about this tax credit here.

You can also claim the tax credit if you replace your old water heater with an electric hat pump water heater. The requirements on these water heaters is that they must meet the Energy Star requirements

Electric storage tank water heaters do not qualify for the tax credit. Neither does electric tankless water heaters.

Biomass Stoves
Biomass stoves that heat your house or your water do qualify for the tax credit. They must have a thermal efficiency of 75% though. Biomass stoves burn biomass fuels that are derived from plants.

Install a qualifying water heater or biomass stove during 2009 or 2010 and you could possibly claim 30% of the costs for it. You can do this through the Federal tax credit for energy efficiency.
