The Carolina Panthers head into Sunday's game against the Washington Redskins looking for their first win of the season. Regardless of the outcome of the game, Panthers' running back DeAngelo Williams is a winner. Williams is the one behind players throughout the NFL wearing pink cleats in support of breast cancer awareness.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. The NFL had already planned on supporting breast cancer awareness in October by wrapping the goalposts pink allow players to wear pink wristbands and gloves during the games. This started in last week's games and even some of the coaches' hats had pink in them.
Williams wanted to show more support, so he asked the league if they would allow pink cleats. The NFL agreed to let five or six players from each team to wear pink shoes for two games.
Williams is very active in breast cancer awareness. Like many NFL players, he has a personal connection. Williams' mother is a five year survivor of breast cancer. He has also lost three aunts to the disease.
According to the Susan G. Komen Foundation fact sheet, a woman dies somewhere in the world every 68 seconds. That is about as fast as Williams can run the length of the football field for a touchdown.
Each year there are around 1.3 million women diagnosed with breast cancer. More women die from breast cancer than any other cancers; about 465,000 a year.
Williams could only watch other NFL players wear the pink cleats last week on the TV. It just so happened to be the Panthers' bye week. Rested up Williams hopes to wear his pink shoes out Sunday against the struggling run defense of the Redskins. If he can then he could bring home the first win of the season for the Panthers and help raise awareness about breast cancer. Go DeAngelo Go!
