
The latest US Navy warship has been sent out to sea. The USS New York has left dock and has headed to the city it is named after for its commissioning. Heading home as part of the ship is some of the steel salvaged from the World Trade Center after the 9/11 attack.
The front bow of the USS New York was made with 7.5 tons of steel that came from the remains of the World Trade Center. The USS New York is the first of three ships to hit the seas that will be named after locations that were involved with the 9/1 attacks. Still under construction are the Somerset (Pennsylvania County)and the Arlington (Pentagon).
The USS New York was built at the Northrup Grumman's Shipyard just outside of New Orleans. The 684 foot Nay warship costs $1.2 billion to build.
It is a Navy amphibious assault vessel. Once at sea, the USS New York will be able to carry 800 Marines.
During battle, the USS New York will launch cargo and troop transport ships. It will also launch helicopters from its deck.
Sent off by a cheering crowd along the Mississippi River, the USS New York left New Orleans for its trip to New York on Tuesday. After it is officially commissioned, the Navy warship along with its World Trade Center steel will be stationed at the Naval base in Norfolk, VA
