It was not a perfect game, but both the defense and the running game stepped up for the Carolina Panthers in their game against Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Panthers pulled out a much needed 28-21 win over the Bucs keeping their playoff hopes alive.

The Bucs jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter. The Panthers' defense lead behind Julius Peppers continued from last week to play more like the Panthers of the past. They began to be able to put pressure on Josh Johnson.

Panthers' running backs, DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart started to run the ball. It was signs of last year's Panthers running game. In the second quarter, Williams ran in for his first touchdown of the game to tie the score 7-7.

The first half ended with Dante Wesley being ejected for a nasty hit to the Bucs punt returner Clifton Smith. Smith received a concussion and missed the rest of the game.

After half-time, the Panthers came out and took a 21-7 lead. The Bucs came back to close the game 21-14.

Sammie Stroughter returned a kickoff 97 yards or a Bucs touchdown. Stroughter replaced the injuried Smith for kick returns.

The Bucs' Tanard Jackson tied the game in the fourth quarter off of a Jake Delhomme's interception. This was Delhomme's second one of the game.

Then the Panthers' running game took control and literally ran out the clock. The Panthers ran off over eight minutes off the clock in their last drive. Williams scored his second touchdown of the game to cap off the 16 play, 80 yard drive.

The score also gave the Panthers a 28-21 lead with just 29 seconds left in the game. The win takes the Panthers to 2-3 for the season. The Bucs remain winless at 0-6.
