During a recent study at York University in Yorkshire, England; researchers could not find any evidence that supported the belief that copper bracelets or magnets helped patients with arthritis. Instead, they determined that if any benefit came from wearing the bracelets; it was due to a placebo effect.
In essence, the patient mentally thought they were feeling better since they were wearing the bracelet. A person's mental thoughts are some of the strongest medicine available.
The study looked at 45 patients that were 50 years old. Each suffered from osteoarthritis.
During the study each patient wore four different bracelets.
- two wrist bracelets with different levels of magnetism
- copper bracelet
- placebo bracelet
With each bracelet, the researchers analyzed the patients' pain relef, stiffness and physical function. It was determined there was no significant difference in these three areas regardless what bracelet the patient was wearing.
While the bracelets are virtually harmless; they should not be used by certain people. Those that have a defibrillator, pacemaker or uses an insulin pump should not use one. Pregnant women should also not wear the bracelets.
Even though the copper bracelets are harmless to most people; arthritis suffers should save their money on them. With the results of this study that copper bracelets have no effect on arthritis pain; they are basically just pieces of jewelry.
