A study by researchers at Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine in New Orleans, has determined that high blood pressure plays a part in millions of premature deaths each year in China. It is estimated that around 2.3 million cardiovascular deaths each year in China are attributed to high blood pressure, also known as hypertension.

It is estimated that millions of Chinese have high blood pressure. While only about a quarter of those with high blood pressure know they have it. An even smaller amount are taking medications to help control it.

High blood pressure can be controlled with medication. It can also be preventable in some cases. Proper exercise, not being overweight, smoking, and reducing salt intake can all help prevent or lower blood pressure. A healthy diet including whole grains have been proven to lower blood pressure too.

The typical Chinese diet is high in salt. This is one of the key causes for there being such a problem with high blood pressure in China.

While there is a major problem with high blood pressure in China, the Chinese are not alone. In 2000, over a quarter of the adults in the world had high blood pressure. That number continues to grow each year. Unfortunately each year, millions of people die from high blood pressure related issues.
