Leading the best of seven series 3-1 going into the Yankees Angels game 5, the Yankees had plans to do what the Phillies did the previous night; earn a trip to the World Series. The Angels spoiled the Yankees plans with a 7-6 win on Thursday night.
The Angels wasted no time taking the lead in the game. They quickly scored four runs in the first inning. They managed to hold the Yankees scoreless till the seventh inning.
In the seventh inning the Yankees loaded the bases. Mark Teixeira doubled scoring all of the runners on the bases. Teixeira came in to score a run off of a single by Hideki Matsui. Teixeria had reached second base when Alex Rodriquez was intentionally walked. A-Rod and Matsui then scored when Robinson Cano tripled.
The Angels fought back to take the lead again in the bottom of the seventh. They scored three runs to make the score 7-6.
In the ninth inning, the Yankees made an attempt to rally back. They loaded the bases with two outs off of two walks and a hit by pitch. Angels' shortstop Erick Aybar caught a pop up by Nick Swisher to end the game.
Jeff Mathis lead the Angels with three hits. He broke a franchise record of six consecutive postseason hits.
With the Angels win in the Yankees Angels game 5, the teams head back to New York. Game 6 will be played in the Yankee Stadium on Saturday.
