The World Series weather forecast calls for just a chance of rain during the game. The players will have to tend with a breeze of around 12 mph. Otherwise, it should be a great night for a ballgame.
For only the sixth time in World Series history, two former Cy Young winners will face off. Both Yankees starting pitcher CC Sabathia and Phillies starting pitcher Cliff Lee have won the Cy Young award.
Lee won the Cy Young award last year while he and Sabathia were teammates together on the Cleveland Indians. The Phillies will need a strong game out of Lee. Their bullpen is considered to be their weak spot.
Like Lee is for the Phillies; Sabathia is the Yankees strongest pitcher. Sabathia was named the MVP of the American League Championship Series that ended on Sunday.
Lee and Sabathia will be facing off against some of the strongest batters in the majors. Both teams are considered to be powerhouse hitting teams.
There is reason to believe that there could be lots of home runs during the 2009 World Series. In the regular season, the Yankees hit 244 home runs and the Phillies hit 224.
Both ballparks led the majors with home runs being hit out of them this season. Yankee Stadium had 161, while Ciziten Bank Park recorded 149 home runs this season.
Both teams' pitching staff have also allowed a number of home runs this season. The Yankees pitchers have allowed 181 and the Phillies pitchers have allowed 189 home runs.
Alex Rodriquez has lead the Yankees in the home run hitting. So far in the postseason, A-Rod has hit five out of the park.
During the postseason, the Phillies have become less dependent on the home run for their scores. But to beat the Yankees, the Phillies will still depend on their strong hitters, Ryan Howard and Jason Werth.
The World Series game 1 Yankees vs the Phillies is key for both teams to get off to a good start. The Yankees are going after their 27th World Series Championship and are favored to win. The Phillies are going for a repeat and win back-to-back titles as they defend their 2008 World Series Championship.
