A plane crashed deep in the Amazon rain forest on Thursday. Out of the eleven on board, nine Brazilian plane crash survivors were found safe by local Indians.
The Brazilian military transport plane took off from Cruzeiro do Sul in the Acre state. It was heading towards Tabatinga in the Amazonas state near the Brazil, Colombia and Peru borders.
Aboard the Cessna C-98 plane was seven health officials and four crew members. The Cessna is a small single propeller plane that is used to carry passengers and cargo.
The flight was scheduled to take about two hour. But 58 minutes into the flight radio contact was lost and the pilot transmitted a distress signal.
The plane had crashed deep in the Amazon jungle that has been the area of many plane crashes. The Brazilian Air Force sent out eight aircraft to search for the plane in the thick and massive rain forest.
A local tribe of Indians that live near Aurelio called the Matis, located the plane crash site in the Itui River deep in the Brazilian rain forest. It took the tribesmen about two hours to walk to the crash site from their village.
The Matis tribe is just one of many tribes in the Brazilian rain forests that have had little contact with the outside world. The tribes consists of about 300 members and is known to be very friendly.
When the Indians found the plane crash site, they notified the Brazilian Air Force. The plane had crashed into the river.
The nine survivors were said to have been in good shape. Of the two missing, one passenger was trapped inside the plane and is believed to be dead.
The other missing person was one of the military crew. He survived the plane crash, but set out to find help. Area Indian tribes are searching for him now in the jungle.
The plane was carrying medical supplies and were taking the seven health officials to give vaccines to remote Indian tribes. This was part of a vaccination campaign.
The Brazilian plane crash survivors are fortunate that they survived the plane crash into the river. They are also fortunate that the Matis Indians found them to help the Brazilian Air Force to rescue them.
