For the first two games of the 2009 World Series, the hot New York Yankees bats had been fairly quiet. They came to life in the Yankees vs Phillies World Series game 3 as the Yankees won 8-5.

Saturday’s night game was delayed almost an hour and half due to rain in Philadelphia. Once the game started, the Phillies jumped on the board early and took the lead.

Phillies strong hitter, Jayson Werth started the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run. The Phillies added two more runs for a 3-0 lead.

The Yankees struck back in the fourth inning when Alex Rodriguez’s double was ruled a home run after being reviewed by instant replay. It was the first time ever instant replay was used in the postseason. A-Rod’s two run homer tighten the score 3-2.

The Yankees tied the game 3-3 in the fifth inning off of a soft single just over the shortstop by pitcher Andy Pettitte. Pettitte would earn the win for the game a few hits later when the Yankees took the lead for good 5-3.

In the sixth inning, Nick Swisher added another home run for the Yankees. Swisher was on the bench for the World Series game 2 after he did not get a single hit in game 1.

Werth hit another home run for the Phillies in the bottom of the sixth. The Yankees lead 6-4.

The Yankees bats continue in the seventh and eighth innings. They added a run in the seventh and another home run in the eighth. Hideki Matsui’s eighth inning home run gave the Yankees an 8-4 lead.

The Phillies tried to rally back in the ninth inning. All they could add was one more run. Carlos Ruiz hit another Phillies home run for their final score for the game. Rodriguez ended the Yankees vs Phillies World Series game 3 by catching a pop up by Jimmy Rollins.

After winning the last two games and getting their hitting going in the Yankees vs Phillies World Series game 3, the Yankees have the momentum heading into a crucial game 4 Sunday night. The Yankees lead the series 2-1. If the Phillies hope to repeat as World Series Champions, they have to win game 4. Also see Yankees vs Phillies A-Rod Homers On A Replay.
