Fort Bragg had eleven soldiers at a training exercise at Fort Hood when the shooting took place. The military have accounted for all of the Fort Bragg soldiers and they have been reported as safe.
Since the shooting at Fort Hood appears to be an isolated incident, there is no reason to believe there is any threat to Fort Bragg. Still, Fort Bragg has increased security at the nine gates going into the base and in the housing areas.
Due to the Fort Hood shooting, officials at Fort Bragg are also looking at procedures at how the base would handle if another shooting occurred on the base. Fort Bragg experienced an on-base shooting by one of its own soldiers back in 1995.
Some North Carolinian National Guardsmen were also at Fort Hood. The 10th Attack Reconnaissance Battalion from Morrisville had five members at Fort Hood being processed to be deployed to Iraq. All of the Guardsmen have been reportedly unharmed.
A full official list of those wounded or killed during the Fort Hood shooting has not been released yet. Of those confirmed to have been wounded was a soldier from North Carolina.
Staff Sgt. Alonzo (Mac) Lunsford from Richmond County was wounded during the Fort Hood shooting. Lunsford was shot three or four times according to reports. Lunsford was stationed at Fort Hood.
One of the heroes of the Fort Hood shooting is Sgt Kim Munley; who shot and wounded Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan to end his shooting rampage. Munley grew up in Carolina Beach.
During the shoot out Munley was wounded from multiple gunshots. Munley’s husband is a soldier in the Army and is currently stationed at Fort Bragg.
The military is flying him to Fort Hood to be with his wife. Munley’s family is also traveling from North Carolina to Texas to be with her.
North Carolinians send out their thoughts and prayers to those who were injured or killed in the tragic Fort Hood shooting. As more details come out of Fort Hood, they realize just how close to home the shooting really was.
