Each year, seniors have six weeks to review and make changes to their Medicare plan. In most cases, this is their only chance to change their plan for the next year.
This year it is important for seniors to carefully review their plans and make any changes they need to. Some of the Medicare Advantage plans that have been available are no longer going to be offered.
So those with one of the Medicare Advantage plans that will no longer be available, they will need to select a new plan. Otherwise, they will automatically be enrolled into traditional Medicare for 2010.
Another issue seniors will have to be concerned with this year is the increase in price of most premiums next year. Many of the plans will be seeing price increases and some are significant.
The average Medicare Advantage plan will be going up 33% from $36 to $48 a month. The average Medicare B stand alone plan will increase by 11%; with an average of $39 a month.
During the Medicare Annual Election Period seniors can shop around and find plans that fit in their budgets. Some of the Medicare Part D plans cost as little as $9.
Regardless if the senior is looking at a Medicare Advantage or Medicare Part B plan, they need to do their homework before making their decision. They need to be sure that the plan they select covers their doctors and their prescriptions.
If the plan they select does not cover their doctors or drugs, then they will be paying for a plan that does not cover their needs for 2010. Seniors can go to Medicare.gov or call 1-80-Medicare to compare plans that are available to enroll in this Medicare Annual Election Period.
