The Nikon Coolpix S230 is a slim and sleek camera that makes it easy to take on the go. This compact digital camera does not feature many functions found on some other digital cameras.
Which makes the Nikon Coolpix S230 a camera to consider for those that are looking for a simple point-n-shoot camera. The select features the camera does have gives the user the ability to do more with their images if they want to.
The Nikon Coolpix S230 is a 10 megapixel compact digital camera. The camera sports a Nikkor 3x zoom lens.
The 3 inch LCD screen takes up the majority of the back of the camera. Nikon designed the camera to have a place in the back for the thumb . This makes it easier to handle the Nikon Coolpix S230 even though it is a relatively slim camera.
The LCD screen is where the user controls the majority of the camera's functions. Using the Nikon touchscreen capability, the user can go through the menus and options when working the camera.
The touchscreen is a feature that some users will like and some will not. The menus on the touchscreen is easy to navigate though.
Since most of the functions are controlled through the touchscreen on the back of the camera, the Nikon Coolpix S230 only has 4 buttons on the camera. It has an on/off, photo review, shooting mode and a combine shutter and zoom toggle button.
With most of the back of the camera being taken up with the touchscreen, there is no optical viewfinder on the Nikon Coolpix S230. This may be a problem when the user is trying to take a picture out in bright sunlight. LCD screens are difficult to see in bright sunlight.
The camera offers users a movie mode they can create short videos with it. It also has the Nikon 4 way Vibration Reduction to help with camera stabilization.
In the camera's Smart Portrait System is the smile shooting mode and blink proof. The Nikon Coolpix S230 also has a Scene Auto Selector.
One neat feature that the Nikon Coolpix S230 is that the user can override the auto focus of the camera. This can be done by touching the back of the touchscreen to select the focus area.
Another great feature this camera offers is the User-Selective Distortion Control System. With this system, the camera can correct the distortion that commonly occurs when a close up wide angle picture is taken.
Unfortunately, the Nikon Coolpix S230 does not have the great noise reduction that many of the higher end Nikon cameras do. Around ISO 400 the image quality really starts to drop off dramatically.
The camera is made of a sharp looking body made out of plastic. This makes the Nikon Coolpix S230 a very lightweight camera.
Overall the Nikon Coolpix S230 is a good snapshot camera. More serious photographers will want to look at other Nikon cameras to find the features and functions they are looking for in a camera.
Walmart's Black Friday special on the Nikon Coolpix S230 has the camera on sale for $139. It normally sells for $179.88.
