Currently, there are around 23.7 million Americans with diabetes. According to the study, that number will be around 44.1 million in 2034.
The study also predicts that most of those with diabetes in 2034 will have type 2 diabetes. In fact, the study says 90% of them will. Type 2 diabetes is type of diabetes that develops over time.
Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure. It can also cause nerve damage and even damage blood vessels. Many with diabetes end up having to have a lower limb amputated.
Being overweight along with family history, heart disease and high blood pressure are risk factors for developing diabetes. Some feel that diabetes is a preventable illness in many cases.
The study estimates that cost to pay for treatment of diabetes will increase to $336 billion. Currently it is $113 billion.
Funding for preventive measures for diabetes is part of the health care reform that is currently being debated in Congress. Those writing the health care reform are hoping to address the increase in spending by funding care that would help prevent the development of diabetes.
If the study is correct, by 2034 the number of Americans that have diabetes will double. It will also cost the US three times what it costs now to treat diabetes.
