Davydenko Surprise Winner of 2009 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals

Davydenko won ATP Finals - Emmett Hume

Nikolay Davydenko beat every Grand Slam winner this year to win the 2009 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals tournament. Davydenko defeated Juan Martin Del Potro in straight sets on Sunday in the O2 Arena in London.

Going into the 2009 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, Davydenko was ranked seventh in the world. Davydenko just did edge out Novak Djokovic to make it into the semi-finals of the tournament.

Like the Bryan brothers who won the doubles 2009 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals earlier on Sunday, Davydenko lost his first match on Monday in his round robin stage. Djokovic defeated Davydenko in that match.

Since the lost to Djokovic, Davydenko went on to beat Rafael Nadal in the round robin stage and Roger Federer in the semi-finals. Federer was crowned the 2009 ATP World Tour Champion.

Davydenko faced the US Open Champion Del Potro in the finals. Davydenko had control through out the whole match against Del Potro.

In just 84 minutes, Davydenko won in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. This was is fifth tour title this year.

Davydenko just came short in winning last year's ATP Finals. He lost to Djokovic last year.

With the win in the 2009 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, Davydenko moved up to being ranked sixth in the world. He passes Andy Roddick who missed the tournament due to an injury.
