Serena Williams Outburst Costs Record Fine

After months of waiting, news of what action the Grand Slam committee would take has finally been released. Serena Williams outburst at the 2009 US Open will cost her $82,500.

During her semifinals match against Kim Clijsters, a lineswoman called Williams for a foot fault. Williams proceeded to verbally attack the lineswoman.

After the Serena Williams outburst, Williams was fined $10,000 at the US Open. The fine was the most allowed on-site and the Grand Slam committee was to investigate the incident.

Since then Williams and the tennis world has waited to hear what further actions the Grand Slam committee would take for the outburst. On Monday, the committee laid down a hefty penalty.

For the outburst, Williams will have to pay $82,500 in fines. She will also be on probation for 2010 and 2011.

The fine will increase to $175,000 if Williams has another outburst at a major tournament during those two years. Another Williams outburst will also cause her to be banned from the next US Open.

The fine is the largest in tennis history. But it is still less than 2% of what Williams won playing tennis this year.

Prior to the fine handed down for the Serena Williams outburst, the record fine given out was to Jeff Tarango. His outburst occurred during his third round 1995 Wimbledon match.

For his outburst, Tarango was fined around $48,000. This video shows Tarango's outburst.

Ironically, Williams turned pro in September 1995. She has become the most dominate player on the women's circuit.

The Serena Williams outburst at the US Open has cost her more than just the $82,500. Williams is working now to regain some tennis fans back.
