Sigma is having their first-ever scholarship contest for high school seniors. The winning senior will receive a $5,000 check and a $1,000 gift card to be used towards the purchase of Sigma equipment.
Sigma Corporation of America has manufactured cameras, lenses and flashes for photographers for over 50 years. They produce their own line of cameras, as well as lenses compatible for Nikon, Canon, Minolta, Olympus and Pentax cameras.
Through the Sigma scholarship contest, Sigma will be helping one high school senior advance their education. It will also help them obtain their goal of a career in the photography industry.
The scholarship contest is open to any high school senior that will graduate in 2010. The student must also plan to obtain a degree or certificate in a photo-related field. This could be in photography, photojournalism, graphic arts, visual arts or art history.
Those entering the Sigma scholarship contest must submit a submission package. The package must include an application, a brief essay and three to five images with a connecting theme.
The essay must be 800 words or less. It must describe the student’s thinking behind the photographs and the thematic intent.
Applications for the Sigma scholarship contest will be accepted from November 19, 2009 through February 15, 2010. Students do not have to use Sigma equipment to produce the images for the submission.
There is two parts to the Sigma scholarship contest. From the images submitted, there will be an online voting contest.
Online voting will occur February 16th through April 23, 2010. The top three vote-getters from the online voting will become the finalist for the Sigma scholarship.
The submission package from those three finalists will be judged by a panel of Sigma executives to determine who will receive the scholarship. The panel will judge the submission packages based on creativity of selection, technique and image quality.
The winner of the Sigma scholarship contest will be announced May 3, 2010. More of the rules and the application to apply are available on the Sigma website.
