Baylor Upsets #8 UCLA In NCAA Volleyball Championship

In a stunning upset on Saturday, Baylor upset the number eight seed UCLA 3-1. The win was the Bears first-ever second round win of the NCAA Volleyball Championship tournament.

The win gave Baylor their third win ever in the NCAA Volleyball Championship. Baylor's first-ever victory over UCLA was also the Bear's first time beating a top 10 team.

Baylor played excellent defense to defeat UCLA at the Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles. Allison King led the Bears with 25 digs.

Baylor out-digged UCLA with a team total of 94 digs compared to the Bruins' 78 digs. Taylor Barnes added another 20 digs, in addition to her 50 assists and 8 kills. Jordan Rice had 19 digs for the Bears.

Baylor did not just rely on defense to beat UCLA. The Bears offense was strong and consistent.

The Bears had four players with more than 10 kills. Katie Sanders led Baylor with 13 kills.

Elizabeth Graham gave Baylor 12 more kills. Anna Breyfogle and Torri Campbell added 11 and 10 kills to help secure the win over UCLA.

Baylor's surprise victory over UCLA gives the Big 12 Conference five teams in the Sweet 16 of the 2009 NCAA Volleyball Championship. Along with Baylor, the Big 12 will be represented by Iowa State, Nebraska, Texas and Texas A&M.

Baylor's upset win over UCLA advances them to the 2009 NCAA Volleyball Championship's Sweet 16. This is the Bears (24-9) first time in the Sweet 16. They will play the number nine seed California (20-10) on Friday December 11th in Gainesville, Florida in the tournament's third round.
