Penn State senior and Durham, NC native, Megan Hodge was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division I National Player of the Year for 2009. Hodge received the award in Tampa where the Nittany Lions are going after their third straight NCAA Volleyball Championship.
Hodge is ranked in the top-ten in the nation for both kills and hitting percentage. The Penn State senior averages 4.75 kills per set and .399 hitting percentage.
Hodge has also surpassed 2,000 kills with 2,121. Only one other Nittany Lion has ever accomplished this.
While Hodge has been at Penn State, they have only lost 5 match and have won 141 matches. Including the 101 in streak since September 15 2007.
All of these stats will change Saturday when Hodge and her Penn State teammates go for their third straight NCAA Volleyball Championship. The top seeded Nittany Lions will play the number two seed Texas for the 2009 title.
Hodge has also been named to the AVCA First-Team All-American 2009 team. Hodge is only the fifth player to have every been named to this team each year of their collegiate career.
Being named National Player of the Year is nothing new to Hodge. While a freshman at Penn State in 2006, Hodge was named the National Freshman Player of the Year.
The daughter of two former US Virgin Island National Volleyball team, Hodge was born in St. Thomas, US Virgin Island. Her family moved to Durham when she was three.
Megan Hodge will hope to led Penn State to their third NCAA Volleyball Championship on Saturday. It would be another feather in the cap for the Durham native, along side the National Player of the Year she has earned.
